Masque & Pettycote, Olympia’s home for Costume and Formal Wear Rentals,  Theatrical Costuming production as well as Custom work and Alterations is pleased to announce classes relating to the art and study of costume. Anyone with an interest in art, clothing, history or craftsmanship can benefit from the expertise of our instructors to hone their skills or gather new knowledge. Makes a great gift!

Mishka Navarre- Instructor – is a professional Costumer with an MFA in Costume     Design. She has 25 years experience in the field, has produced costumes for over 100 productions. She is also an artist who has been featured in several solo and group art shows.

The Elements of Design

Design in all of its forms from clothing to architecture utilizes a basic “toolbox” of elements including line, shape, color, texture and focus . Includes discussion and hands on projects. How do designers and artists of all types use these tools to create functional, beautiful and evocative pieces? Come discover how the elements of design are all around you and how you can use them as you create. 2 hours a week for 2 weeks. Instructor- Mishka Navarre. Figure drawing is one of the most technical of art skills because it relies on the artists’ ability to depict form, volume and proportion while portraying something which is as familiar to us as the back of our hands. Learn some basics of figure and face construction which is a vital skill for Costumers, Fashion Designers and Artists in general. 2 hours a week for a 3 week series. Includes Instructor and Model . May contain nude figure drawing sessions if all class members are over 18. Create a Costume Design Drawingfates

One of the major tools of the Costume Design and Fashion industries is the ability to depict the clothed body and how to render different types of fabrics on the body form. Work with clothed models and color medium to create your own costume design plate. Needed Materials: Bristol board tablet, Inexpensive drawing paper tablet, watercolor and brushes or colored pencils. Suggested prior class “Drawing the Figure”  2 hours a week for a 3 week series. Includes instructor and Model fees.  Instructor Mishka Navarre   Dates –Monday Jan 14, 21, 28 7:00-9:00 p.m. Cost $58.00.

Mending Pile Monday Night

Got a pile of clothes that need a tweak here, a hem there29-0460CL_1L? A hole? A broken Zipper? Do you hate to get rid of it but don’t know what to do with it? Come use our workshop, machinery, tools, and know-how to repair that zipper, put in that hem, adjust that fit and learn new skills to help keep that pile from reappearing. Regularly First Monday of the month, Includes instruction, shop and thread fee. Some materials such as zippers, fabric and buttons are an additional cost/bring your own. Maximum 6 people.Instructors Mishka Navarre/ Ricky German. $20 per session Dates:   December 7, Jan 4 , Feb 7 7:00– 9:00 p.m.

 

Costume History Series

Clothing tells the story of an era and part of a Costumer’s job is to be able to research and portray historical periods. Learn about the styles, lifestyles and fashion oddities of each time period. Each series is 3 weeks with three 2 hour sessions with fun visual presentations and period clothing examples.

1- Ancient cultures to Byzantium Dec 3, 10 & 17 7:00 pm 9:00p.m. 

2- Early Medieval to Renaissance Jan 5, 12 & 19 7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.  

3- Elizabethan to 1789 Feb 2, 9 & 16 7:00 p.m. –9:00 p.m. 

4- French Revolution through the reign of Victoria March 1, 8 & 15 7:00– 9:00 p.m.  

5- Edwardian and the 20th century through 1950 March 22, 29 & 5 7:00-9:00p.m. Eliz form                                                                                                                          Cost: $50.00 per 3 week series. Purchase all 5 classes in the series for $175 (a $75 savings). We advise that the courses be taken in order as new information will build upon prior information, but it is not necessary to have studied earlier periods to learn something new and interesting about each period.
